For teams that want PostgreSQL without managing a database server themselves, Cloud SQL can provide a managed operating model while keeping PostgreSQL familiar to developers. The important work is not simply creating an instance; it is designing connectivity, security, backups, migrations, observability and application behaviour around it.
When PostgreSQL on Google Cloud makes sense
- You already use PostgreSQL and want to reduce server administration.
- Your application is moving to Google Cloud or Cloud Run.
- You need managed backups, patching and operational tooling.
- You want a straightforward path from an existing PostgreSQL environment into a managed service.
A practical architecture
A typical Cyprex-style architecture is: browser or business client → application/API → Cloud Run or another compute layer → Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL. Secrets and database credentials should be handled outside source code, and network access should be constrained to the application components that need it.
The database should remain the system of record while application services own business logic. This keeps the database easier to evolve and reduces coupling.
Implementation steps
- Inventory schemas, extensions, database size, connection patterns and application dependencies.
- Create the target Cloud SQL instance with the right region, sizing and PostgreSQL version.
- Design private/public connectivity and application authentication.
- Create users and roles around least privilege rather than sharing one superuser.
- Migrate schema and data, then validate row counts, constraints, queries and application behaviour.
- Configure backups, maintenance, monitoring, alerts and recovery procedures before production cutover.
Migrating an existing PostgreSQL database
A migration is more than copying data. Test schema compatibility, extensions, functions, sequences, identity values, time zones, connection pooling and long-running queries. For production systems, define the acceptable outage window and choose a migration method that matches it.
Before cutover, rehearse the migration on a representative copy. Record timings and validation steps so production day is a controlled procedure rather than an experiment.
Cloud Run + Cloud SQL
Cloud Run is a natural application layer for APIs and containerised services that need PostgreSQL. The design still needs connection management: stateless application instances can scale faster than the database can accept new connections. Use conservative pools, timeouts and sensible scaling limits.
Also plan failure behaviour. If the database is unavailable, the application should return controlled errors rather than endlessly retrying and creating additional load.
Security and operations
- Keep database credentials in a managed secret store.
- Use least-privilege database roles.
- Restrict network paths and administrative access.
- Enable backups and test restore procedures.
- Monitor storage, CPU, memory, connections and slow queries.
- Document who can make schema changes and how releases are applied.

How Cyprex approaches it
Cyprex can design the target architecture, deploy application services on Google Cloud, set up PostgreSQL on Cloud SQL, migrate data, connect APIs and build the operational checks needed for production.
